Ming De Nasty - TAG (Exhibition)

To celebrate Birmingham Pride 2019, SHOUT Festival are delighted to bring back our enormously popular exhibition of portraits LGBTQ+ women in Birmingham TAG, to Birmingham Hippodrome from 23rd-26th May.

This intimate collection of portraits created by photographer Ming De Nasty celebrate LGBTQ+ identifying womxn living in Birmingham and the surrounding area. Supported as part of our ongoing commitment to platform the voices, experiences, and identities of queer people in the West Midlands, TAG, captures insights into the lives of LGBTQ+ identifying womxn from across the region through a series of one on one portrait sessions with the artist.

‘I wanted to explore the debate around identity and make portraits that showed people as unique individuals, to give the participants a space to tell their own stories and expose shared experiences’.

Ming de Nasty, October 2018

In a world that requires so many labels, individuals are trying their best to be true to themselves in a society that often wants to restrain and normalise. This collection of images highlights the difference amongst Birmingham’s LGBTQ+ women and the extent to which their self-definitions are at odds with cis heteronormative expectations.

Join us on Saturday 25th May after the Pride Parade from 1pm-3pm, for a free pop-up portrait taking session with the artist for your chance to celebrate your own identity and get your own portrait taking (and receive a free copy). No advance booking required.

TAG by Ming De Nasy is a touring exhibition first showing at SHOUT Festival 2018. The mobile exhibition structure is designed by Juneau Projects. TAG has been made possible with support from Arts Council England, Shout Festival, A3 Project Space, The Flash Centre Birmingham and Kaleidoscope Imaging. Thanks to all the participants.
