‘Breeders’ First Sharing

"I was so pleased by the generous and supportive response we received at the first public sharing of Breeders. This is only the beginning - but I'm grateful for the meaningful conversations we started, the connections we formed, and what's in store for the future of the script!" - Louis Wharton, Artist in residence

Louis Wharton is one of three emerging artists we are working with at Shout. We are supporting and mentoring Louis in the development of his new queer play, Breeders.

Senior Producer, Hannah Phillips says ” Louis is a very talented writer and we look forward to seeing how this intergenerational sharing of both lived experience and new writing informs the development of Breeders.”

A big thank you to our partners Birmingham Pride and The Nightingale Club for providing the space for rehearsals and the sharing of this original work. Louis would like to thank the Sir Barry Jackson Fund for funding the production elements of this first sharing. We would also like to thank the invited audience who came along to support and inform the development of this project.

“Having seen the first read-through of Breeders, I felt like the writing gave a true reflection of what it was like back in1986 as a gay man in Birmingham. The script and the actors captured the raw emotions and difficult times we went through. I can’t wait to see the finished version.” – Garry Jones (Designer of Ribbons, Birmingham’s AIDS and HIV Memorial)

“I can see this taking off and being an extremely interesting piece of theatre.” – Twiggy
