Birmingham Queer Archive are seeking LGBTQ+ people interested in being interviewed to talk about about their lives and memories within Birmingham (and surrounding areas). We are looking to hear from people from the Global Majority, women, and trans and non-binary people. This is not an exhaustive or exclusionary list of people we want to engage.

Interviewing team

Our experienced and trained LGBTQ+ interviewers will provide a safe and welcoming space to share as much or as little as you feel comfortable and help guide you through the process of oral history interviewing.

Dr Hassan (he/him) Lead Interviewer

What really draws me to this project is that it sits at the intersection of things that have shaped my work for years: queer storytelling, archival practice(s), and working directly with communities to document lived experience(s). So, a project like the Birmingham Queer Archive feels incredibly important, particularly because of its focus on voices that have historically been overlooked: women, Global Majority communities, trans and non-binary people. It is also very important to me that the interviews we conduct are not extractive and are instead led with care and as a means to platform underrepresented voices from our community. And on a local level, being based in Birmingham, I think there’s something really powerful about creating a resource that captures the city’s queer histories in a way that people can access, recognise themselves in, and build from. 

Sym (they/it) Assistant Interviewer

As a Brummie / Black Country bab who experienced their queer becoming in various communities in Birmingham – as well as working with queer and QTIBPOC folk in the city for over 8 years – Sym is interested in queer archives and histories as a part of their own lineage in Birmingham, and how these stories can bring a new sense of affinity to the city – for themself and other queer brummies trying to find their place.

I’m excited to be part of the team recording conversations for the Birmingham Queer archive for now, for the past and for the future. The importance of an archive to recognise voices that are not always clearly present or heard, to document Birmingham’s queerness and diaspora. The focus on Global majority, trans, non-binary and women’s voices is a reason and passion to be involved with this project. More than ever, giving increasing danger, minimising and taking away of the personhood and rights of LGBTQA+ people, listening, documenting, asking questions of people and their experiences is about care and recognition. Birmingham is a place I live and I’m delighted to be part of this team and project to document people in their own words to show queer life as it has been lived, is being lived, could and will be.

At the end of September, Shout Queer Arts & Culture and Birmingham LGBT Centre had the privilege of collaborating with The Pansy Project, founded by artist Paul Harfleet, for a very special series of events.
 
Since 2005, Paul has been planting pansies at sites where homophobic and transphobic abuse has taken place. Each flower is planted as close as possible to the location of the incident, photographed and documented as part of an ever-growing archive of LGBTQ+ experiences. The work is a quiet but powerful way of confronting hate, remembering what has happened, and making visible experiences that so often go unreported.
 
Shout joined Paul on a Pansy Planting Tour, visiting sites across Birmingham where homophobic hate crimes and abuse have taken place. Together, we planted pansies in these places of harm, transforming them, however temporarily, into places of remembrance, reflection and resistance.
 

This felt particularly important at a time when we know that LGBTQ+ hate crime continues to happen on our doorstep. West Midlands Police recorded 721 LGBTQ+ hate crimes in Birmingham in 2022, 799 in 2023, 669 in 2024 and 634 in 2025. These figures need to be understood carefully, and they do not capture the full experience of hate or the incidents that go unreported, but they demonstrate that this is not simply something that belongs to the past.

The planting tour was followed by a panel discussion exploring queer infrastructure in Birmingham, asking what our city needs in order to support, protect and sustain queer lives, communities, spaces and histories.
 
You may have noticed that there is now a pansy painting by the entrance to the Centre. This is something I want us all to recognise as much more than a piece of artwork. Paul Harfleet painted the pansy, and it is his first mural in Birmingham. Through The Pansy Project, the pansy has become a symbol of reflection, remembrance and resistance.  

Paul has written about how the flower’s name has historically been used as an insult against gay men, while its connection to the French penser, “to think,” gives it another meaning: reflection. His work turns sites of hatred into places where we stop, remember and think. Unlike the planted pansies, which are living, temporary interventions, a painted pansy can remain. It creates a permanent presence within the community and serves as a lasting reminder of the project and what it represents. That is what we now have at Birmingham LGBT Centre. We are now guardians of this work and of what it stands for.

 
It stands for the people we have lost. It stands for the people who have experienced hatred, violence and abuse simply for being who they are. It stands for the resistance of our community. It stands for our right to exist visibly and proudly in our city. And it stands for the future of Birmingham’s queerness.
 

Having this work at the entrance of the Centre matters enormously. It means that every person who comes through our doors will encounter a visible reminder that queer history is part of Birmingham’s history. It reminds us that the streets around us have not always been, and are not yet, safe for everyone. But it also says something equally important: we are here, we remember, we resist, and we are continuing to build something for the future.

 

The Pansy Project has always used a very simple gesture, a single flower to create space for conversations about violence, memory, visibility and resistance. Now, that gesture has a permanent place at the Centre. I hope that we can all take a moment to look at the pansy, understand the significance of why it is there, and feel proud that Birmingham LGBT Centre is now part of its story. This is not just something on our wall. It is something we are responsible for carrying forward!

Paul Harfleet is currently seeking locations to plant pansies at sites of homophobia and transphobia in Birmingham, in association with Shout Queer Arts & Culture.

Since founding The Pansy Project in 2005, artist Paul Harfleet has been planting pansies at sites of homophobic and transphobic abuse. Each flower is documented, titled after the words of the abuse, and added to The Pansy Project Website. This quiet yet powerful act gently confronts hate crime and brings visibility to LGBTQ+ experiences that often go unreported. His photographs have been exhibited internationally in various contexts.  To date, Harfleet has planted more than 300 individual pansies around the world, from London to New York and beyond. 

The pansy plantings remain the core of The Pansy Project, though Harfleet has created other ways of sharing the story of The Pansy Project over the years, from eco-friendly merchandise, to a jewellery collaboration with Tatty Devine. In 2010 Paul collaborated with his brother Tom to create a gold medal winning Garden at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. In 2015 he was the subject of a feature length documentary; Les Pensées de Paul.  In 2017 he wrote and illustrated ‘Pansy Boy, a children’s picture book that was short-listed for the Polari First Book Prize. In 2022 The Pansy Project was showcased by Cheddar Gorgeous on Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK, highlighting The Pansy Project to a global audience. About Birmingham Queer Archive

In 2007 Birmingham LGBT launched the Gay Birmingham Remembered website with National Lottery Heritage Fund support, utilising archive material and user submissions to compile stories spanning the past hundred years of Birmingham’s LGBTQ+ history. Nearly twenty years later, the popular website is showing its age, in functionality as well as its curatorial approach to intersectionality and untold perspectives; meanwhile LGBTQ+ culture in Birmingham faces new threats, from loss of venues to pushback on trans rights, focusing a need to better document and celebrate our heritage.   

A new generation of Birmingham LGBT practitioners will now repurpose, re-catalogue and refresh the existing website, improving accessibility, inclusion and navigability, capture a new layer of LGBTQ+ stories of Birmingham through interviewing – focusing particularly on women, global majority, trans people, and those outside the dominant white paternalistic narratives of LGBTQ+ history. This project is called Birmingham Queer Archive.

Elements of the project will include:  

  • Oral histories transcribed and made available condensed on a new iteration of the Gay Birmingham Remembered website and in full at Birmingham Library’s Archives, along with community photographs, flyers and images. 
  • An exhibition at TBC location curated by Birmingham Queer Archive team and community steering group. 
  • A Birmingham LGBTQ+ heritage talks programme for activists, academics, artists and historians. 
  • Multiple creative outputs developed and created by the Birmingham Queer Archive team showcasing their journey working on this project as well as their lived experiences
The Team
Owain (he/him) Historian & Artist

brutalisturinal is an artist who makes work about trans and queer sex, BDSM and cruising practices and public space, temporality and transience. His work has been described as equal parts horny, sad and funny which also sums him up as a person.

Sym (they/it) Assistant Interviewer

Sym is a live artist, arts & community facilitator and ritualist based in Birmingham. Its practise primarily focuses on connection and communication, and how liberatory practices can be attempted on both micro and macro levels. 

As a Brummie / Black Country bab who experienced their queer becoming in various communities in Birmingham – as well as working with queer and QTIBPOC folk in the city for over 8 years – Sym is interested in queer archives and histories as a part of their own lineage in Birmingham, and how these stories can bring a new sense of affinity to the city – for themself and other queer brummies trying to find their place.

 

Fran (she/her) Assistant Interviewer

I’m an artist working in writing, performance and audio. I also sit pets. I make work in response to histories of place, people, nature, objects and the way stories are collected and told. My work has been co- produced and commissioned by Birmingham Rep, Duckie & Fierce Festival and I’ve been artist in residence at The National Waterways Museum and Warwickshire Archives. I made podcast Stories to Tell in the Middle of the Night (strange stories for sleepless nights) and audio works for Coventry City of Culture and The National Trust. I’m usually trying to get wet in a pool, pond or puddle.

Hassan is a researcher, theatre-maker, and cultural facilitator. His research predominantly investigates the de/construction of queer identities both on, and off, the British stage. His practice explores the transformative effects of (queer) histories and lived experience(s) on present and future iterations of (queer) identities, communities, and (sub)cultures. Hassan loves rewatching Buffy, playing Pokémon & losing himself on the dancefloor.

Candice (she/they) Digital Archive Officer

Candice Nembhard (okcandice) is an artist-curator, writer, archivist and musician. They are the director of sonic practice studio Bedtime Stories, co-founder of queer dance party SHUBZ and a radio resident for Berlin’s Refuge Worldwide. Their practice is concerned with grief methodologies, Black audio-visual archives and uses of the sonic in civic space. Previous positions include Curator (Sheffield Doc Fest), Digital Curator (Birmingham Museum & Gallery), Curator (Eastside Projects), Guest Lecturer (Royal College of Art), Acquisitions Advisor (Government Art Collection) and fellowships with the Woven Foundation, Jerwood Foundation, and Obsidian Foundation. Candice is currently researching the sonic-somatics of grief through their live performance series ‘Offering’ and is training to be a Death Doula.  

For the last six years, I’ve been working closely with local archivists and collections documenting various aspects of Birmingham life; Vanley Burke (Soho House), Baff Akoto (BOM) and the Birmingham Now oral history project (Birmingham Museum & Gallery). I’m keen to continue developing publicly accessible platforms for stories derived from my native Birmingham — especially for communities who are often underserved and overlooked in our city’s wider narrative. I’m a firm believer that archiving is a civic duty and my hopes is that in joining the project, we can begin to shift the narrative on who gets to be an archivist and what gets to be recorded and collected. 

Lacey (she/her) Project & Marketing Lead/ Curator

Lacey has worked in Birmingham’s LGBTQ+ community in various capacities for over 10 years and is currently an Artist, Marketing Manager and Project Manager. Connecting, showcasing and working with local LGBTQ+ Brummie businesses & creatives is her passion. She loves all things LGBTQ+, kitty cats, pink things & fluffy things.

I’m proud to lead this archive as it’s aims reflect values and goals I’m passionate about and have channelled into my work throughout the years. Being a part of Birmingham’s LGBTQ+ history through this archive project has given the team and myself an opportunity to document many previously unheard voices and hopefully, add a bit of Queer joy and light in a time that feels as though it’s getting darker.

 How to get involved

We’re looking for LGBTQ+ people with a connection to Birmingham, to be interviewed as part of our Oral History collection. We’re also looking for volunteers to join our team who will assist with software assisted transcription, item cataloguing and support our future events and workshops.

Your stories will be included in Birmingham Queer Archive, preserving these important but often overlooked histories of dissident sexualities for future queer generations. Donations of objects are also welcome; everything from event flyers to gear to membership cards to items of clothing.

While we’d love to chat to all LGBTQIA+ people with something to share, we are especially interested in hearing from trans people and people of colour as these voices are the most overlooked in this field. You are welcome to remain anonymous and you will be able to redact anything from your interview at any time. You are free to speak as openly as you wish and your stories will not be censored. Interviews can take place at the Birmingham LGBT Centre on Hurst Street or at your home.

Help shape Birmingham’s queer histories and Shout. We’re building a steering group for the Birmingham Queer Archive, and we want you involved. Whether you’re a long-time queer-bod about Brum, a queer history lover, or just passionate about preserving LGBTQ+ stories, we want to hear from you. Project Background: 

Birmingham LGBT delivers a range of services to the LGBTQ+ community in Birmingham and the West Midlands, including trans services, wellbeing support, counselling, sexual health promotion, youth work, older people’s support, arts, and domestic violence (IDVA) services. We are based at Birmingham LGBT Centre, the first LGBT Health and Wellbeing Centre in England and Wales.  

The Birmingham Queer Archive will tell the story of Birmingham’s LGBTQ+ heritage from the 1960s to the present day paying particular emphasis to the previously overlooked accounts of women, Global Majority, trans and non-binary voices. 

We will present new and refreshed oral histories alongside ephemera and images from Birmingham’s queer social history, presenting the new collection through an accessible and intersectional lens, hosted on an online interactive archive which will be explored through expert talks and a long-term public exhibition. 

The steering group will support decision making and development of the project through delivery. 

 

About you: 

We are seeking people who are curious and want to be involved in making sure we are meeting the project aims of being relevant to those traditionally excluded from the annals of history.  

You do not need to be an expert or have a background in history and heritage. 

This project explicitly includes people from the Global Majority, women, and trans and non-binary people. This is not an exhaustive or exclusionary list of people we want to engage- but we will endeavour to ensure the makeup of the group is inclusive of people with these lived experiences and backgrounds. 

NB: Allies- we love you, but this is a queer project by and for queer people. The steering group is explicitly for LGBTQIA+ people. Feel free to follow us on socials, donate to the project, and attend our public events. 

 
Steering Group Expectations: 

The group will be between 8-14 people who will meet every 2 months with the Project Manager and Project Lead to help shape, steer, and inform the decision-making process. (Keeping us on track!) 

Along with project updates and decision making, we will brainstorm ideas, map events, and spot gaps in the project together. 

Birmingham Queer Archive will provide snacks and soft drinks. 

We will meet Thursday evenings and Birmingham LGBT Centre 

This is a voluntary role, pre-agreed reasonable expenses incurred (such as travel to and from the meeting) will be paid. If you have any access requirements, including accessible transport please let us know!

Location: Birmingham LGBT Centre, 151 Hurst St, Birmingham B5 6EW 

Fixed Contract: £9,000 (Effective 1 day/week, £300/day, 30 weeks)  

Job Type: Freelance contract, beginning April 2026  

 

Background 

Birmingham LGBT delivers a range of services to the LGBTQ+ community in Birmingham and the West Midlands, including trans services, wellbeing support, counselling, sexual health promotion, youth work, older people’s support, arts and domestic violence (IDVA) services. We are based at Birmingham LGBT Centre, the first LGBT Health and Wellbeing Centre in England and Wales.  

The Birmingham Queer Archive will tell the story of Birmingham’s LGBTQ+ heritage from the 1960s to the present day paying particular emphasis to the previously overlooked accounts of women, Global Majority, trans and non-binary voices. 

We will present new and refreshed oral histories alongside ephemera and images from Birmingham’s queer social history, presenting the new collection through an accessible and intersectional lens, hosted on an online interactive archive which will be explored through expert talks and a long-term public exhibition. 

Birmingham Queer Archive would actively encourage applications from people underrepresented in the heritage, cultural, and creative sector. This includes people who are racialised, those who identify as, (d)Deaf, disabled and/or neurodiverse, trans and non-binary, and those who are care experienced.

Shout are stoked to announce the launch of Birmingham Queer Archive Project.
 
LGBTQIA+ culture in Birmingham faces new threats from loss of venues to pushback on trans rights, bringing sharply into focus a need to better document and celebrate our heritage.   
 
Shout will work towards repurposing, recataloguing, and refreshing Birmingham Gay Remembered, improving accessibility, inclusion and navigability. This will culminate in an online archive, an exhibition, and more!
 
If you want to be involved we have an initial Expression of Interest form which will help us start mapping!

About Catwalk Extravaganza

Fierce Fashions – Luscious Lip syncs – Delectable Dance and a splash of the XXX factor are all on show in this spectacular event. Born out of Queer Black Joy, Catwalk Extravaganzas are exploding around the UK to sell-out crowds.

Following on from the success of the last three shows, the Shout Catwalk Extravaganza will be the ultimate competition in Lip sync, Dance and Performance. Community participants, professional queer collectives and fierce individual performers are invited to battle it out for the audience, and they will have the power to decide who will be crowd winners.
