House of Bab: Vogue Workshop with Darren Pritchard

ALRIGHT BIRMINGHAM THE HOUSE OF BAB IS COMING!

It’s about time Birmingham had its own Vogue Ball, so this November SHOUT, Birmingham Hippodrome, and DanceXchange are teaming up to present the SHOUT Vogue Ball. We’ll be bringing houses from across the UK to compete, and that means Birmingham needs to represent.

Ballroom culture was created by people of colour in New York City in the 20th Century. It is an opportunity for queer people who feel under-represented to be celebrated and celebrate themselves.

We are looking for some incredible midlands queers to form the House of Bab – we need people who can walk (or wheel), vogue, lipsync, own the runway, and turn a look. We’re really excited to be welcoming Darren Pritchard, mother of the House of Ghetto, to Birmingham to help develop the house alongside UNMUTED and Dan Daw.

The House of Bab is a fully inclusive queer ballroom house, it is open to anyone who identifies as LGBTQ+ and lives in the Midlands. #QUEERCRIP culture is embedded into the house’s ethos, we are committed to making the house fully accessible. If you identify as disabled this is for you, if you have any access needs please get in touch with us so we can make sure they are accommodated.

Darren will join us on Saturday 28th September from 2pm at DanceXchange to run an introductory vogue workshop to help us find our house members.

We are looking for people to walk the runway in the following categories:

Fantasy – individuals who can turn the most creative, high fashion, out of this world looks and stomp down the catwalk in them.

Solo Voguers – individual dancers and voguers to hit the runway with their dance skills: new way, old way, vogue fem – it’s your choice.

Sex Siren – sexiness comes in all shapes, colours, genders, bodies, and sizes. We are looking for confident walkers (and wheelers) to bring their sexiest attitude to the runway.

Lip Sync –  performers with excellent lipsync skills who can bring all the energy to the stage just by moving their mouths.

If you’re not sure what any of these categories mean but think you’ve got what it takes then worry not – each category will be explained in detail at the workshop. You don’t need to be experienced to get involved, the House of Bab is an opportunity to explore your fiercest self.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED:

If you’d like to be involved in the House of Bab just sign up to our free introductory workshop via this link: – we’ll be using this workshop to find people who will form the house, but it will also be a fun chance to learn some basic vogue moves and strut your stuff.

Selected house members will take part in regular workshops with Darren leading up to the SHOUT Vogue Ball on 15th November.

If you’ve got any questions before attending then get in touch by emailing Adam on shoutfestival@blgbt.org

IMPORTANT INFO:

Please note that this is an opportunity for people who identify as LGBTQ+. We encourage people of all ethnicities, backgrounds, gender identities and abilities to take part, priority for joining the House of Bab will be given to people of colour and those with disabilities. You must be over 18 years old to get involved (there is no upper age limit).
